THE TYPES

There are two key classes of IRB that are readily identifiable by the type of hull they have.

CLASS 1

A class 1 IRB has a soft hull that is fully inflatable, with at least three separate inflatable buoyancy compartments and a separate inflatable keelson.

CLASS 2

A class 2 IRB has a rigid hull that is partly inflatable with at least three separate inflatable buoyancy compartments, bonded to a rigid hull.
Class 1 and 2 IRBs’ are very different in the way they are constructed but are operated in the same way. They look very similar but the Class 2 rigid hull is recognised by the yellow fibreglass hull. The image below showing a red hull indicates it is a Class 1.
